Former minister of Natural Resources McAllister Hanchell launched an attack Wednesday on fellow People’s National Party member Carlos W. Simons, saying no member of the Governor’s Advisory Council or the Consultative Forum should be allowed to hold an executive position in the party. “The notions that a member of Gordon Wetherell’s Advisory Council or Consultative Forum could attend or be allowed to attend our party’s NGC sessions is an insult to and an outright disrespect for the party,” Hanchell said in a lengthy, caustic statement sent to the local press Jan. 20. “These people should be considered as traitors, and we must expose them for who they are.” Simons, a lawyer who chairs the Consultative Forum, shot back a response, saying he knows party rules and has every right to run for a party position, including party leader if he so chooses. “Mr. Hanchell confuses loyalty to the PNP as a party (and to the TCI as a country) with loyalty to former Premier Michael Misick and the government he misled,” Simons said. “The two are not identical. I confirm my loyalty to the former and continue to renounce the latter.” Hanchell also accused Simons of conspiring with the British government to drive Misick from office. Misick stepped down after a vote of no confidence in Parliament. “I decline to dignify Mr. Hanchell’s otherwise unwarranted personal attacks with any sort of response,” Simons said.
