The Turks and Caicos Islands landed 15th out of 25 participating countries at the 39th CARIFTA games in the Cayman Islands, bringing home one medal. Ifeanyi Otuonye, hailing from Grand Turk, brought home the silver medal with his 1.98 metre high jump in the Under 17 category during Sunday’s competition. The seven-member Team TCI left the country April 1 with high hopes and returned proudly on April 7, with Otuonye making the only podium performance. It was three days of intensive and often nail-biting competition. The annual CARIFTA Games, which act as a regional showpiece of young and upcoming athletes from the Caribbean region, took place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Grand Cayman. Jamaica dominated the games, winning the overall first place position with 72 medals, including 37 gold medals, 22 silver medals and 13 bronze medals. Second place Trindad and Tobago were significantly overshadowed by the Jamaicans with a total of 40 medals. Third place went to the Bahamas with 29, and fourth place Barbados took home 18 medals. The TCI team was comprised of Teray Smith and Gina Agenor from Providenciales; Ifeanyi Otuonye, Anthony Clarke and Delano Williams representing Grand Turk; Wendrico Seymour from South Caicos; and Domanique Missick from North Caicos. They were accompanied by Head Coach Paul Beckford, team manager Rosalie Ingham, Assistant Coach Winston Quelch and Technical Official and 2nd Vice President Russell Cox. Also joining the team were TCAAA President Neroy Kennedy and 1st Vice President Dorn Fulford, along with TCI Director of Sports Alvin Parker.
