Carlos Simons is not letting any grass grow under his feet in his campaign for leadership of the Progressive National Party.Just days after announcing his candidacy March 31, Simons began a tour of the country’s various constituencies. Just 10 days into his candidacy, he was already making his third official stop on the campaign trail on April 10. Over the weekend he visited Middle Caicos, where he met with Constituency Council members and party stalwarts, and on Sunday, April 11, he attended the divine hour church service at the Mount Mariah Baptist Church in Conch Bar. On the previous weekend, Simons made similar stops on the islands of Grand Turk and his native island of Salt Cay. Simons said it was apparent to him so far that the people appreciated that both the party and the country were in deep crisis. He also commented that the rebuilding of each was a man size job that was going to require strong, level-headed and credible leadership, and that this is precisely what he offers the party and the country at this critical time. However, Simons said he felt it was not right for him to weigh himself against other potential candidates at this early stage, especially when none of them has formally entered the race and had the opportunity to make their case. On April 13, Simons disclosed his relationship with the recently closed TCI Bank so that his party and all residents would know: “I was a director of the bank between November 2008 and September 2009 when I resigned after taking on the chairmanship of the Consultative Forum. I was also president of the Bar Council at the time. “In addition, one of the Senior Commercial Associates in my Office represents the (Financial Services Commission) in this matter. However, so as to avoid the obvious conflict of interest issues, I have deliberately not involved myself in any way with the Court application made by the FSC in relation to the Bank and its operations.” Simons is the first candidate to officially throw his hat into the ring for party leader. The voting will happen at the party’s national convention scheduled to begin Aug. 6. Simons said he plans to pick up his all island constituency campaign for leadership of the party with a visit to North Caicos on April 24.
