The students at the BEST Institute will soon have a LIME-sponsored playground project valued at $5,000, thanks to Sophia Thomas who won LIME’s CARIFTA Schools Sports Text Competition.

The competition, which ran from March 8-April 5, allowed LIME’s customers to text at local rates for a chance to win $5,000 which would be donated to finance a sports-related project at the school of their choice. Projects could include the improvement of an existing sports facility, the purchase of sports-related equipment and supplies, or the establishment of a new facility.

The text competition formed part of LIME’s strong promotional and community support for the 2010 CARIFTA Games, which were held in Cayman from April 3-5. LIME, the Caribbean’s leading telecom company, was the presenting sponsor of this year’s games, contributing $200,000 towards the staging of the event and the broadcast of live coverage to 23 countries.

In addition, LIME also provided financial support for national teams attending the games in most of the 13 Caribbean countries where the company operates. Here in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the national team received $3,000.

“The presentation of this prize is the culmination of one of the most exciting and memorable sponsorships LIME has done in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Caribbean,” said Drexwell Seymour, general manager for LIME in the TCI. “We were very pleased to have given the people of this country the chance to be a part of the excitement of the CARIFTA games and also to have given our customers a chance to win something tangible and lasting for the school of their choice.”

“We certainly hope that this playground project goes a far way in enhancing the school’s sporting programme and helping to prepare our student athletes for future regional and international competition,” Principal Leonard Glasgow added.

Thomas said she was elated to win for the school. “I was watching the CARIFTA games, and I decided that I would just try to send some text messages. I was so surprised and happy when I received the call that I had won the prize. I know that the students at BEST will make full use that this opportunity provides.”

Across the region, LIME is financing similar sports related school projects as the promotion was conducted in almost every country where the company operates.

Each winning school in the participating territories had a chance to win the grand prize, which was a visit from international sprinting sensation and former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell. In a random draw, the Anglican Primary School in St. Lucia won.

Asafa, who is currently ranked as the world’s third fastest man, will visit the school on May 4.
