![]() The Department of Environment and Coastal Resources and the National Trust have planned several activities in recognition of International Biodiversity Day Celebration, May 22. On Friday, May 21, DECR will be planting red mangroves along Venetian Road. Lignum vitae, gumbo limbo and mahogany trees will be planted around the National Environmental Centre in the Lower Bight. The United Nations proclaimed May 22 International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The DECR will continue to rescue of endemic and endangered plants for biodiversity conservation in line with the newly approved project funded by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) of the U.K. government. Likewise, the DECR will also highlight the works and progress of the conservation and restoration of the Caicos Pine, the national tree, to commemorate Biodiversity Day. Funding came from the Overseas Territories and Environment Program (OTEP) of the U.K. On South Caicos, DECR will conduct Lionfish capture and elicit help from the local people to eradicate the invasive and destructive fish. And the DECR Grand Turk branch will conduct mangrove field trip and school visits with talks on coral reef ecosystems and their value. The National Trust, the organization committed to the preservation of the country’s natural, historical and cultural heritage, has planned a special North and Middle Caicos trip which will highlight Nature Trails and Natural Resources indigenous to both islands. According to National Trust Director Ethlyn Gibbs-Williams, the Biodiversity Excursion is a special opportunity for guests and residents alike to see the beauty of the two lush Caicos Islands, appreciate the flora and fauna species, and encourage everyone to get involved in conservation work. The excursion is set for Saturday, May 22, and those interested are encouraged to call the National Trust at 231-1172 or 941-5710 for more details.
