Windvibes 2010: Kiteboarding maneuvers thrill spectators at annual contest PDF Print E-mail

Postponed from May 9 because of a lack of wind, the final events of the 4th annual Windvibes Kiteboarding Tournament took off May 16 with good wind, lots of spectators and exciting competition on Long Bay Beach.

The island’s kiters from novice to professional showed their abilities in course racing, during which they navigated an offshore course much like a sailboat race. One event even got some of the kids into the action — body dragging races.

In this event, kiters fly a kite without a board, letting the kite drag their bodies through the water with a child clinging to their backs. Participants won gift certificates from Island Scoop.

But the highlight of the day that everyone was waiting for was the freestyle event, where kiters flew out of the water to perform jumps, complicated twisting maneuvers, and some spectacular wipeouts.

In addition to all the action, the crowd enjoyed food, beverages. And Nadine Guise won the raffle for a kiteboarding lesson from Big Blue Unlimited.

The competition was judged by fellow kiters Stephane Gaudet, Camille Slattery, Mike Rosati, Pie Lopez de Leon, Taru Segran and Mike Decamp. Emcees Terri Tapper and Chester Lee did a great job announcing and commenting on the action.
