Ending two months of suspense, the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce picked Digicel TCI CEO E. Jay Saunders as Business Person of the Year.

Saunders credited his win and success to his hardworking, loyal and dedicated team at Digicel. “Good things happen when you surround yourself with talented people,” he told the fp. “We are a relentless company that never settles for second place. We are community-oriented, a green company, and I am proud to be the quarterback of this successful team.”

Saunders is responsible for capturing 50 percent of the TCI telecommunications market for Digicel in just four years.

One of the factors that contributed to Saunders’ win was his continued dedication to community projects. “It comes back to you many times over,” he said.

Saunders was presented with a gift certificate donated by chamber member Caicos Resorts for a dinner at the Amanyara resort and a certificate from the chamber.

Saunders was chosen from among four nominees, including Josephine Connolly of Tropical Auto Rentals, Connolly Kia Motors and Connolly Zahm Properties; George C. Missick Jr., managing partner of the Karam & Missick law firm; and Eddington Powell, CEO of PPC Ltd. / Fortis TCI.

Votes came by e-mail, phone and personal presentations from chamber members. The board of directors judged nominess on the qualities of how well-respected the nominee is in the business community and their involvement in community projects.

Saunders started with Digicel TCI as its project director on Sept. 1, 2005, and was appointed CEO on Jan. 1, 2006.

Saunders conceptualized the Digicel HIV/AIDS Telethon on Dec. 1, 2008, on World AIDS Day, raising more than $100,000 to buy drugs for HIV/AIDS patients.

He is a director of the Pine Cay Project and he sits on the board of the Turks & Caicos Maritime Heritage Federation, which is preserving maritime heritage and encouraging research.
