Beaches Resort Villages and Spa and its philanthropic arm, the Sandals Foundation, announced the adoption of Clement Howell High School, the largest public high school in the Turks and Caicos Islands with more than 1,000 students.

The foundation has committed to assist with general up-keep of the buildings and beautification of the surroundings as well as monthly school visits. In addition, the charity will also take an active role in assistance through participation in curriculum such as tourism in school, cultural exhibition and National Track and Field championship games.

The foundation has already drafted a 12-month curriculum aimed at enhancing the school. The first project on the agenda is to establish a sick bay, install water pumps at the school and provide CPR training for teachers. Other projects include commencing the highly anticipated library building project and implementing a high school breakfast feeding program for underprivileged students.

Lloyd Fearon, who has been principal of the school for the past five years and has been working tirelessly to find a corporate sponsor for the government high school, expressed his appreciation for this new initiative.

“We are grateful that the Sandals Foundation saw our need and now officially recognizes our institution as one of their adopted schools,” he said. “Providing assistance to the school in the form of teacher training, infrastructural upgrades, and the donation of new technology and books is an investment to both the school as well as the future of the Turks and Caicos.”

Louise Garland-Thomas, assistant education director also in attendance at the adoption ceremony June 24, said “It’s not an easy task for a company to adopt a school of over one thousand students. I applaud the Sandals Foundation for taking on this new initiative.”

Heidi Clarke, director of the Sandals Foundation, said the group is pleased to add Clement Howell to their group of adopted schools.

“The Sandals Foundation puts education of our region’s youth as one of our top priorities,” she said. “We look forward to working with the parents, staff and students at Clement Howell High in our mission to be part of positive change.”

This is the second government school that Beaches and its foundation have adopted on Providenciales, the first being Enid Capron Primary School in Five Cays.

Across the Caribbean, the Sandals Foundation has adopted a total of 27 schools.
