U.K. to loan TCI $15 million PDF  | Print |  E-mail

An almost $15 million loan to the TCI is on its way from the U.K. because the country cannot meet its financial commitments for June, according to International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell.

In a written statement to MP's, Mitchell said the country was in dire need of funds to cover its June expenses, including civil servant salaries - which includes police and teachers.

"Without immediate U.K. support, TCI would fall further into economic crisis," said Mr Mitchell. "Following discussions with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, I have decided to provide a temporary package of financial support."

Mitchell explained that the U.K. would be offering the loan only as a bridge until a package could be put in place with commercial lending institutions. He was specific to note that the loan would come at little or no cost to the British government.

The loan also comes with some strings attached. "This support is conditional on the TCI government strengthening its capacity and systems to manage its public finances and balancing its budget within the next three years," he said in his statement.

The governor is currently in the U.K. to brief new ministers on the country. He left the TCI on Tuesday for a three-week visit, with CEO Mark Capes filling in during his absence.

During his trip, the governor will also be attending a series of meetings, including the Annual Conference of Ambassadors and the annual meeting of Overseas Territories' Governors, according to a statement from his office.

Capes was sworn in June 28 as acting governor before the governor flew out of the country June 29. The governor will return July 26.

This will be the third time Capes has filled in for the governor since he took over the CEO's office in November. Capes served as governor in Wetherell's absence in December and in March.
