A closed session of the Consultative Forum was held July 21 to consider a draft immigration report. During the session, the forum received a presentation by immigration advisor Andy Holden on the key recommendations in his draft report on Immigration Services in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The recommendations addressed challenges posed by both the structure and operations of the organisation. Members of the forum said they welcomed the draft report and requested that the Ministry of Border Control and Labour, which oversees Immigration, indicate the next steps. Forum members said they hoped that the report’s recommendations, when finalized and approved, would help provide solutions to the TCI’s immigration problems. “I welcome this report,” said forum Chairwoman Lillian Misick. “This work targets an important area of reform for the Turks and Caicos Islands. As members stated, we do have problems with immigration for which we need to find urgent and comprehensive solutions.” The forum meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Border Control and Labour Clara Gardiner, the Acting Chair of the Immigration Board and senior members of the Immigration Department. The next meeting of the Consultative Forum on Aug. 3 is expected to look at the constitutional reform process.
