People with a sweet tooth and those who use distilled water can breathe a sigh of relief because the governor’s Advisory Council struck down proposed increases in duties for those products.

Customs advisor Geoff Thorne’s initial recommendations called for increasing duty on ice cream from 12 to 40 percent, high sugar fruit juices from 25 to 40 percent, and sugar from 16 to 30 percent.

The increases were aimed at food items that contribute to obesity and diabetes.

But on Aug. 5, the council approved an immediate reduction of the duty rates on fruit juices and ice cream to 15 percent.

Duty was also recommended to be increased to 40 percent for imported distilled water to protect local businesses that produce distilled water. But the council reduced the duty rate for distilled water to 15 percent.

To support the local water producers, council also reduced duty for items imported by local companies for the production of water to 2.5 percent subject to a service charge of 2.5 percent.

Copies of the new tariff documents are available on CD at any Customs office for $75.
