![]() People who were wrongly granted Crown land for residential development in the Chalk Sound National Park will soon be getting offers of alternative land where they can build, said Crown land advisor Jon Llewllyn. “This was decided under the previous government, ratified by the interim government, and that process is still ongoing at the moment,” Llewllyn said. “I hope that in just a matter of weeks we’ll be able to issue those alternative allocation letters.” The National Parks Ordinance prohibits residential and resort construction in the country’s Protected Areas. However, between 2006 and 2009, 80 parcels in the park were distributed for residential use in parcels ranging in size from 0.32 acres to 1.3 acres. The average price paid per parcel was $8,674. According to government figures, one parcel was sold for only $3,000 and very few parcels were sold in excess of $10,000. Five houses have been started there. Only about half of those people who received property have been granted title to their land, while the rest are under lease purchase agreements, according to the Crown Land Registry. According to Llewllyn, the Galmo Williams administration had recognized the problem in 2009, and the Cabinet decided to offer relocation plans to those who had received property. The governor agreed with the plan, but the Williams administration was stopped short when the government and Constitution were suspended in August 2009. Llewllyn said the interim government continued with the plan by revoking all planning permissions on park land in September, causing an outcry from property owners. “We understand the arguments of the Chalk Sound people,” Llewllyn said. “We understand how the situation arose. A course of action has been decided upon, and that course of action is now being pursued.”
