New Foreign Office Minister Henry Bellingham will make his first visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands on Sept. 19-21, the governor has announced.

“I am delighted that the minister will be visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands so soon after assuming office,” said His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell.

The governor did not say who Bellingham might meet with while he is here, but the new minister has already been paying a lot of attention to the country since he was appointed in May.

A contingent from the People’s Democratic Movement, including party leader Doug Parnell, met recently with Bellingham and others in the U.K., as did the governor.

Questioned by the House of Commons shortly after taking office, Bellingham was asked if elections could be held as scheduled in July 2011 to restore the Constitution and government.

While not giving a definite answer, Bellingham did say that U.K. wants the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team to finish its probe into alleged corruption by former Premier Michael Misick, several of his ministers and others before elections are held.

“We want to avoid the danger of re-electing politicians involved in corruption,” he said.

Bellingham, educated as a lawyer, was a member of Parliament from 1983 until 1997, and has been again since 2001. He was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the FCO in the new government following recent elections in the U.K.

In additional to the Overseas Territories, his FCO responsibilities include Africa, the United Nations, global economic issues, climate change, conflict resolution, and FCO relations with British business.
