The Turks and Caicos Islands joined the Caribbean Community and the Pan American Health Organization to celebrate Caribbean Wellness Day with activities Sept. 6-11 under the theme “Love that Body!!”

Caribbean Wellness Day is observed annually on the second Saturday in September and is an attempt to draw attention to the growing epidemic of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCDs).

This year TCI’s activities climaxed on Saturday, Sept. 11, with “Healthy Village” health fairs in Grand Turk, Salt Cay, South Caicos, North Caicos and Providenciales.

The Ministry of Health and Human Services thanked all the sponsors who contributed to making the week of activities a success.

Some actions to promote health and wellness and “Love that Body” everyday:

  • Increase your fruit and vegetable intake.
  • Get physically active (walk, ride a bike, swim, etc.) for 30 to 60 minutes on most days.
  • Read food labels consciously — know what you are eating.
  • Don’t skip meals. Eat three adequate meals a day.
  • Reduce your portion size.
  • Limit alcohol intake to less than two alcoholic drinks a day.
  • Quit smoking.
