Onshore sand mining banned, new policy for offshore mining PDF  | Print |  E-mail

A new offshore sand mining policy will go into effect Nov. 1 with the first likely target being the channel entrance between Sandy Point and Parrot Cay, the government has announced.

“This new approach to sand mining will eliminate the eyesore of gaping holes caused by onshore mining while preserving the environment,” said Arthur Been, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Communication.

“Developing offshore mining ensures adequate supplies of this important product, especially for the construction sector, and gives government a useful source of income at a time when we must balance the budget in a manner that is responsible and sustainable,” Been said.

The new policy will support the development of offshore sand mining as a replacement for onshore mining, for which there are now insufficient deposits and which has had negative effects on the environment.

A recent study commissioned by the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources identified a number of accessible offshore deposits. Government intends to request tenders from individuals to work in partnership with it to mine the identified sites.

No new sand mining licences will be approved until the policy is implemented on Nov. 1, the government said.
