A Canadian national is recovering at the Cheshire Medical Centre on Providenciales after being shot during a robbery Friday, Oct. 1, hospital officials have confirmed. At about 2:15 p.m. the police and medical personnel responded to a 911 report of a robbery outside the Royal Bank of Canada on Leeward Highway in Centre Mews. Police said a female visitor to the island in the company of her fiance, who lives and works on the island, was robbed of cash and her handbag by two gunmen. The two men were dressed in dark clothing and wearing masks, according to witnesses. Police said the robbers escaped the scene on foot. Investigations into the incident are ongoing. A hospital spokesman from InterHealth Canada said the man was admitted to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre and was treated by emergency staff before undergoing surgery Friday. “It is understood that the victim, a Canadian national living and working in Providenciales, was shot at close range after coming to the assistance of his fiancé, who was robbed at gunpoint after withdrawing money from the ATM,” the spokesman said. “He remains at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre although he is now out of the high dependency unit. He is stable, comfortable and ambulating,” the spokesman said. The man is expected to remain at the hospital until the end of the week.
