FIFA Grassroots training a success PDF Print E-mail

Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association coaches, teachers and Sports Commission staffers got training in the FIFA Grassroots football initiative last weekend, then helped encourage more than 100 children to get involved in the sport.

Commencing some three years ago, the FIFA Grassroots initiative has grown tremendously throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and now the Caribbean. The initiative puts the focus on playing the game, and the basic philosophy behind it is that there is no better teacher than sport.

“I want you to bear in mind the importance of this programme, as it’s not just about FIFA having some instructor coming here to administer a course,” said veteran FIFA Instructor Alvin Corneal, a former Trinidad & Tobago national player and coach. “It’s about making a better Turks and Caicos Islands for the kids who probably would have never seen a soccer ball organised programme.”

Corneal said the TCI’s close proximity to the United States makes it tough to get kids into sports other than baseball, basketball, and track and field. “To increase kids’ interest in football, you have to find creative ways to get them interested and excited in the sport, and at the grassroots level is one of those ways,” he said.

Corneal said that although the world of sports has created superstar athletes, it has not always engendered great role models.

“Being a role model in football is a very difficult thing, whether a player or coach,” Corneal said. “But in a sport such as this, its imperative to have good ethics and be a strong role model, as children today will generally want to emulate you, more so than they do their parents.

The training course took place Oct.8-10 at the National Academy on Venetian Road, culminating with a Youth Festival on Oct. 10 involving approximately 100 children ages 6-12.
