Children write to governor on crime PDF Print E-mail

Students in grades 5 and 6 at the M.I.L.L.S Institute wrote these letters o His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell about crime in the TCI.

Dear Governor,

I want to share my opinion about the crime situation in the TCI with you. There are many reasons why crime is so high in the TCI but I will only mention two. First, we do not have enough jobs in the TCI and secondly, lack of educational opportunities. In light of these two missing resources, raping, robbing and killing are becoming rampant in the TCI.

His Excellency, the ball is in your court to put things in place so that the islands can become investor friendly. The inflow of investors would boost the construction industry which used to be the main source of income for families in the TCI.

Lack of educational institutions for adults are destroying the TCI economy. Most of the burglars are uneducated and have few options to better themselves and make themselves eligible for careers. Many turn to crime as a last resort to survive.

The crime in the TCI affects my family so badly that I am afraid in my own home. We cannot go out as frequently as we used to. We cannot go shopping and feel safe. We cannot go to the ATM machine and feel safe. We actually cannot go anywhere and feel safe, not even school.

Please Sir, do what I ask of you. The crime needs to stop!

Yours Sincerely,
Camoya Nembhard

Dear Governor,

Criminal activities in the Turks and Caicos are increasing. Criminals are robbing, raping and people are dying. Crimes occur whether it is day or night!

Crime is the biggest problem in the Turks and Caicos. Criminals are robbing banks and other businesses because there is poor security.

I would suggest that more police be on patrol especially at popular businesses places at peak hours.

All security must be properly trained to fight against the criminals. Sir, many criminals in the Turks and Caicos Islands are repeating the same acts over and over again and still are not caught!

Police should stake out high crime places, no matter how long it takes! Because once a criminal gets away with robbery once, they go back to the same place and do the same thing again.

Another reason I think why so many robberies are taking place in our country is because too many youths are without a father in their lives. They have no role models, are uneducated, unemployed and blaming others for their misfortunes.

Please Sir; your assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Yours Truly,

Dear Sir,

The crime situation in the Turks and Caicos is becoming worse and worse each and every day. It is affecting my family so much that we cannot sleep and we are afraid to go out at night.

Firstly, we find it hard to sleep at night. One night when everyone in the family was in bed no one could fall asleep. We were afraid that thieves were going to burst open our door and try to rob us and even kill us!

In addition, we are very afraid to go out at night because we are afraid that someone is going to hurt us. For example, my Daddy used to go to the ATM machine at night but now he is afraid.

In conclusion, I would like for you to send more policemen into the communities so that they can catch the thieves. This will help me to sleep better at night and my family will be safe.

Sincerely,

Dear Sir,

I am sure that you are well informed about crime and how it is affecting everyone in the Turks and Caicos. Although crime is a major problem worldwide, the crime situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands is ridiculous!

Businesses and people are being robbed on a daily basis and in broad daylight! I think the increase in robberies is the result of lack of education and the constant decrease of job opportunities that should be provided by government. The crime in the Turks and Caicos is really crazy and it needs to be addressed.

Crime does not only affect the businessmen but it also affects the family. Even the young like myself. Just last Thursday my Uncle, that I am very close with, was one of the many people that fell victim to crime. He was held up at Royal Jewels at gun point! This scared me and I had to see a doctor. May God help us.

In closing, I think that more equal job and learning opportunities should be offered; this would dramatically help to curb the crime in this country.

Sincerely Yours,
William Elliott
