I am a Canadian citizen resident of TCI since 1985. Through the years, I invested a substantial amount of money in this country and now own several properties here. I am also an active member of a local church and a willing donor to the Rotary Club’s community drives and to other local charity drives. I try to give back to this country that I have learned to love; however, I am denied the basic right to participate in the political life of my chosen country and do not have the right to vote at any level. There’s a great outcry from some politicians asking for the return of a democratic government, but we only hear of a democracy based on the exclusive right to vote granted to Belongers. In reality, this most important right is exclusive to a minority of the population. The right to vote should be enlarged to include all permanent residents who are a very important part of the financial and continued well-being of this country. This gesture would help reestablish the trust and confidence of the international community.
