A 50-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday (Jan. 18) in connection with allegations of bribery and corruption in the first criminal case made by the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team. The SIPT confirmed the arrest but would not identify the woman or release any details of the allegations on Wednesday.
However, Jan Messam, who once served as the protocol officer for the Progressive National Party (PNP), was seen being escorted by members of the SIPT into the Chalk Sound police station on Tuesday. Her husband, Rex Massam, confirmed to media that she was in custody. The SIPT was created to answer the call by Sir Robin Auld in his Commission of Inquiry report last year to investigate numerous allegations against former Turks and Caicos Islands Premier Michael Misick and several of his former ministers, all members of the PNP. However, lead prosecutor Helen Garlick has said her team’s investigations would go beyond Sir Robin’s allegations. While the arrest Tuesday was the first originated by the team, it is not its first prosecution. The SIPT took over the prosecution of former OLINT boss David Smith case because of its complexity. Smith, a Jamaican who was living in Providenciales, pleaded guilty in September to operating a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme in return for a 6½-year prison sentence. He is now facing federal charges in U.S. in the same scheme.
