| Digicel makes sports reality at Enid Capron |

 Students of the Enid Capron Primary School in Five Cays were all cheers Friday (Jan. 28) at the opening ceremonies of their new multipurpose court. It was an exciting day for both school staff and students as they were presented with a $30,000 check from Digicel, allowing them to usher in a new era for the school. “Exercise is to the body what reading is to the mind,” said Physical Education Teacher Ivorene Pitters. It was in 2008 at a staff meeting when Pitters voiced her almost unthinkable suggestion that the school should build such a multipurpose court in order to enhance the education of the students. Physical exercise has so many benefits she said, “boosting energy levels, reducing stress, prevent or reduce the risk of health related problems, stimulate brain cells and improve memory,” she explained during the opening ceremony. Pitters said her dream was almost impossible to realize given the financial constraints of the school. However, that did not deter her or Enid Capron’s Principal Rachel Taylor. Nearly two years later, thanks to a great deal of support from the parents and community along with a great big check from Digicel, that dream has now become a reality. The school’s project was nominated to participate in Digicel’s Christmas community project. During the eight-week campaign, customers voted for their favourite of the 12 nominated projects through texts to Digicel. Digicel decided to forgo its normal customer Christmas giveaway in favour of helping a community project. “If you give to a cause greater than yourself, it will come back to you many times, and this is one of those causes,” Digicel TCI CEO E. Jay Saunders said. The Enid Capron multipurpose court project received the most votes and was awarded the grand prize of $30,000 from the telecommunications company. Taylor offered many heartfelt thanks to Digicel for its tremendous support of the school and its sports program. Taylor said the school, which wore red to mark the occasion, would be wearing red for some time to come. The multipurpose court, built by Manchester Courts, offers the ability to play sports such as basketball, paddle tennis, volleyball and badminton, just to name a few. The court will also have other benefits, Pitters explained. “It also means that by incorporating a mix of games, the multipurpose court will not only enhance schools performance in the sports it will offer, but it will also help build community spirit and interaction amongst the students at the school,” she said.
