![]() The benefits from last month’s World Gourmet Affair will continue for many years to come as funds raised from the gala evening are being used to support hospitality programs at six local schools. Whole Gospel Christian Academy, Maranatha High School, New Age Academy, Clement Howell High, Wesleyan Methodist and the Turks and Caicos Community College each received a check in the amount of $1,450 from Scotiabank’s Bright Futures Program, thanks to both a $2,000 donation from the Scotia Private Client Group and funds raised during the gala evening of the World Gourmet Affair. For the first annual World Gourmet Affair from Jan. 17-22, five resorts on Providenciales each hosted a world-renowned guest chef for a week-long culinary extravaganza. The week ended Jan. 22 with a gala event held at the Regent Palms resort. Proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction, together with funds donated by Scotia Private Client Group, raised almost $9,000 which were donated to the six local schools on Friday (Feb. 4). School representatives at the cheque presentation ceremony said they were thrilled with both the experience as well as the much needed funds. The school representatives also commented on the success of the cooking classes each of the five guest chefs provided for the local schools. “Learning did take place,” said John Dolphin, who noted that students were already applying what they had learned in the cooking classes in their school cooking lessons. TCI Community College student Celianise Brunel said with no preparation facilities on hand at the school, having the opportunity to visit the chefs at the resorts offered them a welcomed opportunity to learn first hand. World Gourmet Affair organizer Michel Neutelings added that all the chefs commented that their biggest compliment from the event was having the opportunity to work together with the students. Neutelings along with all of the schools said they were already looking forward to expanding the program next year. Pat Brown, Turks and Caicos Centre Director, Scotia Private Client Group also committed on the part of Scotia Private Client Group to stay on as a sponsor thanks to the encouraging words he heard from the community and schools that were involved. “Bright Futures is a program that is basically dedicated to the kids and teenagers in the community and to ways that Scotiabank can help to support, so listening to the comments this morning, I think we were successful in having that happen,” said Brown. “We are looking forward to next year for sure.”
