A dozen Dominican stowaways were found on a freighter last week, hiding aboard the vessel that was bringing a load of concrete block to Providenciales, police said. When the crew found the stowaways, it notified Turks and Caicos Islands officials. Officers from SPICE and Customs picked up four stowaways, all in their 20s, and took them to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre emergency department on Wednesday, Feb. 10. “One of the patients was found to be suffering internal injuries and was treated accordingly,” said Dr. Denise Braithwaite. “The quartet were suffering dehydration and were treated as such. They were also tested for all other conditions and diseases, as is standard Interhealth Canada practice in these situations.” “The men had stowed aboard the vessel on Friday and had had no food or fresh water since then. Due to desperation they tried drinking sea water but this caused them to vomit,” she said. “Once hydrated and treated, they were then fed and all discharged back into the care of the Customs department.” Subsequent searches of the vessel turned up another eight stowaways, police said. On Thursday, Feb. 10, two more stowaways were taken to the hospital for treatment. “Both were complaining of minor aliments, although neither was considered to be in a serious condition,” a spokesman said.
