Bankers Association warns consumers against phishing e-mails PDF  | Print |  E-mail

There have been increasing reports of fraudulent e-mails circulating that request personal information and bank account information, the Bankers Association reported last week.

These e-mails purport to be from banking institutions but are really fraudulent attempts to acquire sensitive information such as user names, passwords and credit card details, which is known as phishing.

Phishing e-mails request information either directly or by asking the recipient to click on a link and submit their banking information on an online banking log-in page. E-mail scams can take many forms, including persons pretending to be heirs to great wealth seeking financing to help release their inheritance.

The association is warning its customers about these fraudulent activities, asking them not to reply, not to click on any links provided and to delete the e-mails immediately. The association also recommends that you call the bank that is purported to have sent the e-mail so that they may advise customers and the authorities.

“Customers are advised not to reply to e-mails purporting to be from banking institutions requesting private information as these are likely to be scams,” said Anton Faessler, president of the Bankers Association. “The best course of action is to delete the e-mail immediately and advise your bank. If people who receive these types of requests have any possible doubt about their authenticity, please call your bank, but again, in any case, never reply and never open any links.”

“We encourage persons to exercise caution and common sense,” he said. “Never share your confidential banking information with anyone, such as the PIN number or online banking log-in information, and never agree to send funds to persons you don’t know.”
