![]() Opening up children’s minds to the world through books was the celebrated last week at the Ashcroft School. Children and teachers of the primary school in Leeward enjoyed a week of fun activities to celebrate Book Week. “We have seen our children’s reading improve dramatically through reading programs we created this year, and this was another opportunity to celebrate that,” explains Vice Principal Drani Saunders. It was an international celebration where children were asked to bring in books from other countries, including a competition to see who could find books from the most different countries. The children were also treated to mystery readers, where members of the community from countries the world over came in to read books about their home land to the children. “It was really interesting to learn about where they were from,” said nine-year-old Charlie, who had the opportunity to enjoy mystery readers from Russia, Australia, France and the TCI. Building on the theme of the week, students also participated in a poetry recital and a parade where they came as their favorite author. Students used special time during the week to work on a very special project — they are creating their own book. “Through a website called wearewriters.com, the children are creating stories from planning, to drafting, to editing to publishing their own stories,” says Principal David O’Connell. This project has been helped along, thanks to brand new Thinkcenter computers donated to the school from its own Parent Teacher Association. “The kids are loving using the new computers, which are networked together to allow them access to their own files from any computer in the lab. Also the new larger screens are great for the kids,” he noted. O’Connell says the teachers are able to monitor the children’s progress through a special machine just for the teachers. “The week has been amazing, and the children are thoroughly enjoying the fun activities,” he said.
