TCI must prepare for future, Laing says PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Turks and Caicos Islands businesses and people must invest in youth and strive for excellence to help bring the country out of bad economic times, Bahamas Minister of State Zhivargo Laing told a small group of local business leaders.

“I don’t have panic about your future,” Laing said. “I know that the opportunities are there. The question is, ‘what will you do?’ And I think you have the wherewithal to do something about that.”

The politician, author and business consultant urged local businesses to demand excellence in their staffs and their service so that they will be chosen as the best for the job.

Laing’s advice for economic growth in the TCI was similar to that he gave recently in a business outlook for Grand Bahama: revised residency policy, offshore education facilities, offshore medical treatment, recreation and wellness.

He also stressed the importance of building up financial, moral and social reserves to weather the ups and downs in business and in life.

“The seeds of endurance during a crisis are sewn in the days of prosperity. That discipline must be exercised in prosperity so that reserves can be used in recession.

“Every business, every organization, every person has to stop and acknowledge that good times come to an end, and when they do, ‘What will I do?’”

“Will you invest in the reserves necessary to ride the next crisis? Will you ensure that more of your people are able to put in their own personal reserves for the crisis? Will you invest in the mindset and attitude that is necessary to be a good human being in and out of crisis?”

The former TCI government had no reserves when the economic downturn occurred. Instead, it spent the country deep into debt during an economic boom. The U.K. has guaranteed $260 million in loans to help the country on the condition that it build a budget surplus by March 2013.

Laing was the first speaker invited by Magnetic Media, a new public relations and marketing firm, to launch its Motivational Moments series.
