Kennisha R. Grant, a 10th grade student at Champions for Christ International School of Excellence on Providenciales, will be heading off to Durham, North Carolina, this summer after being accepted as an alternate into the Duke University Talent Identification Program’s Summer Leadership Institute for 2011.

Kennisha, the daughter of Millicent Grant and Kenneth Grant, was awarded the opportunity, thanks to her to dedication and hard work in and outside of her school.

“The applicant pool for these programs is global and extremely competitive, and there are limited positions available for students,” explained Champions for Christ Academic Advisor Marisa Matthews.

“Kennisha is a very bright student, and she has performed well on our mock SAT’s. She currently maintains a GPA of 90 percent in addition to participating on the High School Track & Field team.”

Duke TIP’s mission for the Leadership Institute is to encourage students to deepen their commitments to service, philanthropy and civic engagement, no matter where their academic or career paths may lead. The course utilizes the latest methodologies in leadership education to allow students to gain an understanding of leadership through accelerated classroom  instruction and community service-learning experiences.

During her program at Duke, Kennisha will have the opportunity to develop, plan and execute a group service-learning project called a “legacy project.”

Upon return she will be expected to execute the project in her community as her legacy of leadership and volunteerism.

“We are proud of Kennisha receiving this distinguished honor and her opportunity to represent the Turks and Caicos Islands and Champions for Christ International School of Excellence in this most prestigious program offered by Duke University,” Matthews said. “This is indicative of our school’s commitment to excellence in education and raising well rounded leaders for the next generation.”

Champions for Christ International School of Excellence is a private pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school that utilizes the U.S.-based Accelerated Christian Education curriculum focusing on the development of the whole person with specific emphasis on biblical principals and individualized mastery based learning.
