Retired public servants who receive government pensions must verify their identity and residence by June 17 or face losing benefits until they do, the Ministry of Finance has announced. “Historically (government) has never sought confirmation of continued pension entitlement, including that pensioners are still alive, or that they continue to reside in the TCI,” the ministry said in a statement May 16. All pensioners will be receiving a letter at their last known address asking them to confirm their identity and main residence. Documents of proof must be witnessed by a magistrate, justice of peace, medical practitioner or notary public and returned to the Treasury Department or local district commissioners or treasury offices. If the information is not received by June 17, pension payments will be suspended until the information is received, the ministry warned. “This exercise will be the first of a series of regular checks designed to ensure the government has up-to-date information on its pensioners and the administration of all (government) pensions,” the ministry said. “The new procedure is similar to the approach of the National Insurance Board.” The government announced recently that a review of the public service has revealed that some public servants have wrongly received overpayments of pensions, salaries and expense payments. The review is aimed at reducing the cost of the public service which accounts for more than half of government spending.
