A 64-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison for selling Crown land to unsuspecting Haitian nationals in Five Cays.

Thomas N. Ewing was convicted of all 14 counts against him for selling seven pieces of Crown land for more than $75,000 in 2007 and 2008.

The charges came after a government crackdown on buildings illegally built on Crown land. In some cases homeowners bought Crown land from people believed to be the legal owners of the land and built houses in the once sparsely populated area.

The government demolished some unoccupied buildings in November 2009, while others were left standing but with owners not having clear title.

A multi-agency task force has been investigating and prosecuting those guilty of fraud.
