The U.K. Department for International Development will pay for an expert from the U.K. to be temporary registrar of lands while the Turks and Caicos Islands interim government continues its search for a permanent registrar. “Although this post was advertised a number of times over the past two years, we have been unable to attract a suitably qualified and experienced candidate for the role,” the Ministry of Environment and District Administration said in a statement June 22. “Given the difficulty with recruitment, Mrs. Grisilda Smith, the deputy registrar of lands, kindly agreed to stay on after reaching her retirement date.” Andy Gale, an expert in land law and practice with 20 years of experience in the U.K. Land Registry, will serve as registrar of lands to help modernise procedures and coach team members within the department. “He will also provide the transition period necessary to hand over to the next registrar of lands and makes it possible for Mrs. Smith to proceed finally on to her well-earned retirement,” the ministry said. “Mrs. Smith has made a valuable contribution to the work of the Land Registry for over 23 years and to the TCI government for 31 years, demonstrating great commitment to the public service,” said Ministry Permanent Secretary Mary Harvey. “Her hard work and determination over a difficult period has been much appreciated.” The Land Registry oversees all land transactions to make sure they are properly documented.
