Children making false, nuisance calls to 911 PDF Print E-mail

Police want the public to know that anyone who makes a false report or annoying phone call to 911 can face up to six months in prison or a fine not exceeding $5,000.

The warning comes because of an increasing number of false calls from children now that schools are out, police said.

“Juliette Gooding, 911 manager, said she is amazed at how many children have been calling the centre and the foul language they use towards the operators,” police said in a June 30 statement.

“She said that they do not seem to understand the gravity of what they do and when a child calls and says someone is ‘raping’ or ‘killing my mummy.’ This is a very serious act, and parents should ensure that their children are told of the consequences of this type of behaviour.”

Police and 911 are urging parents to teach their children how and when to use 911 and not to give children telephones as toys that can only dial emergency numbers.

“The public is reminded that 911 is a number to use in real emergencies,” police said. “An emergency is any incident that has an immediate threat to life or property.”
