![]() His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell addressed the simmering animosity between political parties and members of his appointed bodies, defending Lillian Misick and Doreen Quelch-Missick against comments by Doug Parnell, leader of the People’s Democratic Movement. “There is absolutely no cause to mischaracterise the contribution of the chair of the Consultative Forum (Misick) and member of the Advisory Council (Quelch-Missick) in London by suggesting that they were somehow motivated by animosity or hatred towards the TCI people,” Wetherell said in a statement July 1. “Different persons are entitled to different views as to how the interests of Turks and Caicos Islanders are best met. But there can be no doubt that the real motivation of the chair of the Consultative Forum and the member of the Advisory Council in London, as throughout their tenures of office, has been what they see as the best interests of the TCI and its people.” Parnell, Misick and Quelch-Missick were among the seven islanders who went to London to negotiate with ministers on proposed changes to the Constitution. Parnell did not agreed with some positions taken and statements made by both women, and he publicly chastised them at a press conference June 29. “We were disturbed at the level of animosity and hatred expressed by the two members of the delegation towards the people,” Parnell said. “How can you call yourself a Turks and Caicos Islander yet hate those who want to better our condition? “So we reject the negative sentiments expressed by the chair of the Consultative Forum and express our belief and our desire for those two persons who represented the Consultative Forum and Advisory Council who spent most of their time supporting views of the (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) officials toward imposing and unacceptable constitutional arrangement on our people, express our desire for them to get in right thinking with the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.” Both women made statements in London that were critical of the political parties, and they agreed with a number of changes proposed by the FCO that the parties opposed. Misick lamented the fact that both parties refused to recognize the authority of the council and forum, and she criticized party leaders for “mounting feckless boycotts and making impudent demands.” Quelch-Missick supported the call for an alternative voting method to put an end to the “present system has lent itself to political pandering; it has been nothing, but divisive and is vulnerable to manipulation.”
