![]() A young Grand Turk native attending college in England has already begun plotting her return back to her homeland. Kenya Jones, an ambitious 17-year-old, has her sails set on one day working at one of the new hospitals in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It has been a dream for her since the InterHealth Canada facilities opened last year, and she’s already well on her way to achieving it. The teenager has just completed a two-week internship at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre on Providenciales, and the hands-on experience has proved a huge inspiration to the budding doctor. “My time at Cheshire Hall has been really interesting, and I’ve been able to experience so much from the emergency room through to the laboratory,” she said. The former H.J. Robinson High School student, who is the daughter of Permanent Secretary of Finance Delton Jones, is planning to attend university in the U.K. after completing her A-levels next year. “I originally wanted to do something in business, but I then became really interested in medicine and science,” she said. “In particular, I have an interest in hemotology, and so I am hoping to go on and do medicine at university. “It was tough going to England to study when I left high school because it was a huge culture shock and I didn’t know anyone. But now I have lots of friends in Kent where I’m based, and there are also a large TCI community in London. “Hopefully, I will be successful in my studies, and my dream is to come back to TCI and serve my country by working at the hospital.” During her internship Kenya had the opportunity to work with her current role model, Dr. Denise Braithwaite, InterHealth Canada’s emergency department head. “Dr. Braithwaite is a real inspiration to me and others,” Kenya said. “She too is from Grand Turk and returned to work in her own country, and I would love to follow in her footsteps one day.”
