Immigration and police officers are investigating how 10 illegal Haitian immigrants escaped from a Five Cays detention center on Providenciales sometime between Sept. 24-25. Security at the facility is handled by a private company, and the Turks and Caicos Islands government said it is “reviewing the contract for security for the center, and a new contract should be in place as soon as possible.” Another 19 Haitian nationals detained at the center did not escape and will be repatriated to Haiti this week, the government said. A press release about the escape also said the government is now “pursuing urgently the full operation of the coastal radar system,” which it said will be fully operational by April 2012. That’s more than a year after it was expected to be in operation. “This is part of the ministry’s comprehensive programme of work to strengthen the borders and enforce immigration laws effectively,” government said.
