![]() Throughout October, the Turks and Caicos Islands Red Cross will provide essential first aid training to 300 police officers and civilian staff. Often police officers are the first to arrive at the scene of an accident or incident where injured people may need lifesaving first aid. It is vitally important that police officers know what to do to treat and stabilise the injured until emergency crews can transport them to hospital. The Red Cross has 14 active first aid trainers based on Providenciales and Grand Turk and has agreed to provide the first aid courses free-of-charge to the police, fire service and shelter managers. Police Commissioner Colin Farquhar said he was extremely pleased that the Red Cross immediately agreed to provide training to police. “It is imperative that our police officers and civilian personnel are able to respond if first aid attention is needed by the public,” Farquhar said. “This is an important partnership, and we appreciate the generosity of the Red Cross and its volunteers.” “The Red Cross is well known around the world for its first aid training courses,” said Julia Brothwell, the British Red Cross Representative to TCI> “And we take very seriously our responsibility to the Turks and Caicos Islands in providing emergency responders with the necessary first aid skills and the confidence to use them.” “It is not only the professionals that need training in first aid. Accidents happen in the home, at school, at work, at sea as well as on the roads and other public areas. The Red Cross would like to see that every man, woman and child knows some key life saving skills, and we have different first aid courses available to suit everyone.” For more information on first aid classes and to buy first aid kits, please call 941-8056 on Provo or 946-2761 on Grand Turk.
