| DECR hosts Migratory Bird Day observance |

 Students and volunteers recently joined the Department of Environment and Coast Resources and the Society for Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds in observing International Migratory Bird Day. Groups of students and teachers assembled Oct. 14 at the Bight Park on Providenciales and visited wetlands to see migratory and resident birds with binoculars provided by SCSCB. While bird watching, they also collected seeds to be dried, cleaned and later sent to the U.K.’s Royal Botanic Garden Kew Millennium Seed Bank for storage. Many of the native plants grown in the nursery are important food and habitat plants for birds. On Oct. 15, people including members of the TCI Environmental Club (TCIEC) met at the Bight Park to conduct bird monitoring and seed collection activities. To further give impetus to the No-Single-Use Plastic Bag Campaign which was supported by the TCIEC during the Environment Day in June, TCIEC hosted a picnic at the park after the bird monitoring and seed collection. A certain percentage of the total seed collection stock will be sown at the DECR’s Native Plant Nursery to be planted in selected sites such as the Botanical Gardens or on school premises. TCI Protected Areas Series
The fp is publishing a series of articles on the Turks and Caicos Islands Protected Area System to increase public awareness and respect for the beauty and value of this "beautiful by nature" country.
