![]() Grace Bay Beach was the mecca of beach volleyball last week as hundreds of tourists played and partied with the world’s top beach volleyball players and pros. For the 18th year in a row, beach volleyball pro Albert Hannemann brought his fellow players to Turks and Caicos Islands to host a volleyball vacation event that attracted guests from around the globe. The week-long event went off without a hitch, according to Hannemann, who said it was his best event yet. “This year’s event went so smoothly and everyone had a great time,” he said. That included his campers — the name he gives the guests who travel to participate in the event — as well as the 16 professional players who came along to play and teach during the week-long festivities. “Beach volleyball players want to play on the best beaches, and this is one of the best beaches in the world,” he explained. This included legendary player Christopher “Sinjin” Smith, who has been called the winningest beach volleyball player of all time. Smith, a California resident, told the fp that he loves coming to the TCI and having the chance to share his knowledge of the sport. During the week the players also took the time to visit some of the local schools, donating equipment with hopes they will inspire future Olympic athletes. “It is a great chance to expose them to the sport, and we encourage them to dream big,” Hannemann said. Hannemann took the players, several of which are Olympic Gold medalists, to the Youth Center and the Clement Howell High School where students had the chance to speak to the players and even try on their medals. “We would beg to play on beaches this nice, and they have it right here in their backyard,” Hannemann said. Beach volleyball is a great sport because it is free, and he hopes that by donating equipment he can help to encourage more youth to get involved in the sport. GOBeachfest III was held at the Club Med resort on Grace Bay from Nov. 5-12, bringing not only a great number of tourists to the island but also recognition. Hannemann, founder of the National Volleyball League in the U.S., promotes the TCI and the volleyball vacations he holds here at the NVL tournaments around the world.
