The official countdown has begun to the biggest party of the year.

With less than three weeks to go, the excitement is mounting in anticipation of Maskanoo 2011.

“We are getting our grove on,” Cultural Director and co-organizer of the event David Bowen told media Dec. 5. Preparations are in full-swing for the cultural family-friendly extravaganza.

“It was a challenging year again to stage this event, but it is an important event, and we were determined to make it happen,” said Committee Chairman Caesar Campbell.

Maskanoo, which caters to residents and visitors alike, will kick off at 3 p.m. and run until midnight on Boxing Day, Monday, Dec. 26. Bowen promises an exciting line up of cultural events including performances by local bands, including Turks and Caicos Islands’ own songbird Barbara Johnson.

Local food, arts and crafts will all be on sale by various vendors from across the islands.

“There are only two spaces left for food vendors at $500 and three retail slots left at $75,” explained Stacey Cox, association executive of the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA), which put on the event with the Cultural and Arts Commission. Cox said those still interested should sign up fast.

She also reminded everyone that the name and logo have been trademarked, and those wishing to use the logo are welcome to get permission from the TCHTA by calling their office.

One of the many highlights of the event will be the Maskanoo parade. According to Bowen, a number of school groups are already entered and busy preparing, but there is still time for more to sign on.

“I hope to have every school involved in the coming years,” he said.

Groups starting as small as 10 can join in the fun by simply signing up.

“This is not a competition,” explained Bowen. “This is about having fun, doing something unique and creative, and celebrating our cultural heritage.” Bowen is holding workshops and encourages any who are interested in participating to contact him for more details.

The event will be held in Grace Bay between the Seven Stars roundabout and the FirstCaribbean bank. It was made possible thanks to many sponsors, including platinum support from Scotiabank and Digicel.

“We were stunned by what a great success Maskanoo was in 2010, and we are thrilled to be involved this year,” said Scotiabank Commercial Banking Manager Jim Olston.

To book space as a vendor, sign up for the parade or for more information, call 941-5787.
