Another weekly strike by government workers was avoided Dec. 6 after the Civil Service Association and the interim government met and agreed to negotiate several issues of the current public service reform.

“Both parties agreed that the meeting (Dec. 1) had been very useful and that they would continue to discuss the issues in good faith,” both sides said in a joint statement Dec. 1. “The CSA will continue work with the Office of Public Service Management within the coming week to address critical human resource issues.”

Both sides agreed to focus on three specific issues which the CSA considered to be critical to its members. The statement did not identify those issues.

“The CSA made two specific proposals in relation to the three issues discussed and, having been armed with the relevant additional financial and human resource information, will now document the proposals in more detail before sending them to (government) by Monday 5th December 2011,” the statement said. “The (government) negotiating team agreed to give serious consideration to those proposals, and will endeavor to respond in the week commencing 12th December 2011.”

The statement did not explain the nature of the two proposals.

During the meeting, the government’s finance team explained the financial situation in detail to the CSA and the difficulty that government faces in considering any cost increases before the end of the 2012-13 financial year.

Upset by government reforms including an offer of voluntary severance packages, pay cuts and reductions in some pension benefits, many of the 2,200 government workers stayed out of work and protested in the streets of the capital of Grand Turk and popular tourist island Providenciales on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and again on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 28-29.

Many government offices were affected, but most essential services and the Providenciales International Airport were operational during the strikes.
