Five men are in custody as police investigate the Jan. 13 robbery outside the Royal Bank of Canada on Providenciales in which a security guard was shot.

Three guards from a local security company arrived to make a transaction when they were attacked by two people wearing masks, police said.

The robbers fired shots, wounding one guard and getting away with an undisclosed amount of money, police said. The wounded guard was still hospitalized at press time.

The robbery is the second in the last five weeks at the RBC branch on Leeward Highway.

On Dec. 16, four robbers escaped with an unspecified amount of money during a morning robbery outside the bank. One guard was shot and killed, and another was wounded.

Four men were arrested in connection with that robbery.

Also over the weekend, two people wearing masks and armed with firearms robbed the Somewhere restaurant at the Coral Gardens resort and some patrons of cash and personal belongings, police said. Shots were fired but no one was injured, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the robberies to contact them at 999 or 946-4259, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477, through a web tip on www.crimestoppers.tc or Turks and Caicos Crime Stoppers on Facebook.

Two robberies also occurred outside the same RBC branch in 2010.

On July 24, 201, an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from several security guards. Shots were fired, but no one was injured.

On Oct. 1, 2010, a Canadian tourist was shot during a robbery outside the bank. Police said a female visitor to the island in the company of her fiance, who lives and works on the island, was robbed of cash and her handbag by two gunmen.

“We are dismayed that another serious incident has occurred at our branch and concerned at the rising level of bold crime in our community,” RBC said in a statement Jan. 16. “Our thoughts are with the persons impacted by this incident along with their families and colleagues.”

“RBC values its operations in Turks and Caicos and wishes to assure clients that we are committed to being a part of the Turks and Caicos Islands community. We are enhancing the security at our current location even more but understandably we cannot give specifics. Our entire network of branch locations in the region is under regular review to ensure that they meet the needs of our clients in terms of safety and convenience.”

“As this is an ongoing police investigation, we cannot provide any information specific to the incident at this time,” the statement said.
