More than 220 turned out to participate in the ACCU Nutrition Fun Run 2012 on Saturday, Jan. 14. “It was a great success,” said organizer and nutritionist Tamika Handfield. “I was very pleased to see tons of children turn out, especially at such an early hour.” Hundreds of participants, walked, ran and even biked the tour to raise money for a healthy eating program at the Enid Capron Primary School. Handfield was proud to present a check Jan. 23 for $3,500 to Enid Capron Principal Rachel Taylor. The donation will be used to fund a six-week nutritional program for students to teach proper nutrition and healthy eating habits. The special nutritional education program and cooking classes have been designed by Handfield to heighten children’s awareness of various fruits and vegetables and sensitize them to the importance of eating a healthy diet. Lessons include both theory and practical applications. “For example, we will be preparing whole grain foods, such as coucus, bulgur and quinoa,” Handfield said. “This will expose the children to grains they may not otherwise be familiar with and how they can incorporate them into their diet.” The children will learn about topics such as the importance of breakfast and various vitamins crucial to a balanced diet. Handfield was thrilled with the community support of the 2012 ACCU Nutrition Fun Run and is already planning for next year. “I have lots of ideas for next year, especially to include more games for the kids,” she said. Handfield said the event was made possible thanks to the support of many local supporters, including Magnetic Media and Deandrea Hamilton, Grace Bay Pharmacy, Liz McGill and family, Got You Covered—Sky Juice, Maureen Woods and Got Beach?, Marine & Coastal Consulting, Provo Beverage (Althea and Galmo Williams), Beaches Turks and Caicos, All About You Hair & Accessories, Price Club, Scotiabank, International Banking Group and Graceway IGA. Prizes were also donated by Islandcom, Faces & Fingers, Excape Beauty Salon & Spa, Overall Fitness, Jo Gray, Caribbean Psychological Services, Anani Spa and SmithCo.
