Dozens of people living on the Providenciales landfill property are being warned to leave the area or be removed by force so the landfill can be cleaned up and modernized for environmental safety. In addition, the Department of Agriculture already has started trapping and euthanizing wild dogs that live at the landfill. The government has contracted with Turks and Caicos Environmental Management (TCEM) to clean up the festering dump off Millennium Highway near Wheeland. TCEM President Tim Hodge has described the country’s open dump disposal sites as “the single largest health and environmental issue facing these islands.” “One of the main impediments to this transfer is the large number of persons residing at the Providenciales site,” the Environmental Health Department said. “It is the Turks and Caicos Islands government’s intention to ensure that all persons so residing at the waste disposal sites be removed and that all unauthorized access to the site is restricted.” “In this regard, the Environmental Health Department wishes to advise those persons who are currently residing at the site that they are to immediately leave or vacate these sites. Failure to do so may result in their being forcefully evicted from these sites or further actions being taken according to the Public Health Ordinance.” The department didn’t say how it intended to notify people living on the property. Government reached an agreement with TCEM in 2008 to clean up landfills on all the islands and deliver solid waste to the Provo landfill for proper disposal. Garbage collection service was also included in the proposal. After repeated delays and financial constraints, the interim government decided to scale back the plan and to first contain the situation at the Provo landfill described by an expert as “a clear unhealthy situation.” Residents complained to the expert of health problems due to a smoke plume that sometimes billows from the site. Illegal residents there were regularly burning tires and wire to recover copper to sell for scrap.
