South Caicos youth now have a new organized sport to practice and excel in, thanks to the Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Football Union.

The TCIRFU sent 16 Providenciales-based rugby players to South Caicos recently to introduce and spread awareness of the high endurance sport to aspiring players.

The touring players were assisted by Jamie Tait (Rugby Development Officer), Keith Burant (Club President), and members James Hamilton and South Caicos’ own Camiko Lewis. The rugby crew was delighted to find almost 20 eager students from both the high school and the primary school to attend the session and to learn more about the sport.

The new participants took part in a selection of exercises that focused on ball handling, passing and communication. The majority of the South Caicos students had never played rugby before, and all of the coaches and students from Provo were impressed with the skill and concentration displayed by the new players.

After the training session, the players were mixed into teams and rewarded with a series of touch rugby games to display their new skills and understanding of the game.

The sport’s introduction proved to be a success, and a future visit from the TCIRFU development team is in the making.

The TCIRFU is always looking for new players and is happy to answer any questions about the sport. For more information, contact Jamie Tait at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
