The Turks and Caicos National Trust will celebrate International Day of Biodiversity on May 22 to raise awareness in the importance of the country’s marine resources in human life. Under the theme “Marine Biodiversity,” the National Trust has planned a symposium that will give importance not only to the role of marine resources to every person, but also the significance of each individual to the survival of marine resources. The public is invited to the National Environment Centre from 9-11 a.m. May 22 to join in conch art and cooking demonstrations, talks about local marine diversity, national parks and the fishing industry and viewing a short film clip about marine ecology. Students are also expected to participate in this event. The TCI is considered a biological hotspot. More than one-third of country has been set aside for preservation purposes, including the largest biodiversity wetland reserve in the world on North and Middle Caicos. The National Trust hopes to instill the importance of biodiversity and make a call to all residents of the TCI to apply sustainable practices in the utilization of the country’s natural resources. The United Nations proclaimed May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

TCI Protected Areas Series
The fp is publishing a series of articles on the Turks and Caicos Islands Protected Area System to increase public awareness and respect for the beauty and value of this "beautiful by nature" country.
