Gartland Centre launches ink, toner recycle project PDF Print E-mail

The Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre will be launching its Ink and Toner Recycling Project to all local businesses, schools, hotels, banks and government agencies on June 22 at the centre on Providenciales.

Each year in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a vast number of empty toners and inkjet cartridges are thrown in the trash and ending up being burned and polluting the atmosphere. However, most of these cartridges can actually be recycled up to six times before disposal. Once collected they can be refurbished, refilled and then resold.

These cartridges are made of industrial plastics and take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Each new laser cartridge takes more than three quarts of oil used to produce.

The Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre is a non-government, non-profit facility that aspires to “Empower the Spirit of Youth” by providing a wide range of extracurricular activities including tutoring, arts and crafts, and sports to young people between the ages of 12-18.

In 2010, a pilot project aimed at recuperating empty ink and toner cartridges from local businesses commenced with the intention of helping to reduce solid waste, conserve raw material, educate the students of TCI about recycling and to help support the centre’s activities and programs.

The centre seeks to manage the project by ensuring effective communication with local businesses registered and reliable transportation for the collection of used cartridges. On the first Friday of every month, these cartridges will be collected, free of charge, and then shipped to Blue Trading LLC Recycling Company in Miami for recycling.

Since the initial trials of this project, two separate shipments have been delivered, and the centre has directly received 100 percent of all the proceeds to use for programs for the island’s youth.

The project is not only a great opportunity to educate the youth and adults of our community about recycling, but it is also good for the environment.
