Turks and Caicos Islanders have until June 29 to register to vote and to obtain Belonger cards. As of June 12, only 3,651 had registered to vote. More than 7,000 voted in the last election in 2007. Obtaining a Belonger card is currently free, but one or more original unlaminated birth certificates are required for registration. For those who do not have birth certificates, the $40 fee for obtaining birth certificates has been reduced to $20 until June 29. After June 29, the birth certificate fee will return to $40, and a fee that has not yet been determined will be charged for Belonger cards. The Ministry of Border Control and Labour says that a number of birth certificates are awaiting collection at the Sam’s Building on Providenciales, Franklyn Misick’s Building on Grand Turk or at the District Commissioner’s Offices on South Caicos, North Caicos, Salt Cay and Middle Caicos. “Individuals who have intentions of registering and need to apply for a birth certificate are notified that they must make an application for the birth certificate by Friday, June 22, in order to receive it before the registration period comes to an end,” the ministry said. For additional information on obtaining birth certificates, call 946-2801 extension 41701 on Grand Turk or extension 81431 or 81433 on Providenciales. Members of the two political parties are offering assistance to people who are having trouble understanding the process and documents needed to register. E. Jay Saunders, a former candidate for leader of the Progressive National Party, has created an online tool to help navigate the process at www.surveymonkey.com/s/tcivoterregistration. Sean Astwood, a former deputy leader of the People’s Democratic Movement, has announced that his party’s office on Providenciales will be open through June 29 to help people with registration.
