Political party and independent candidates are getting familiar with the new top Turks and Caicos Islands civil servants and meeting with U.K. politicians in preparation for Nov. 9 elections and a return to elected government. Meetings July 11 between the interim government and People’s Democratic Movement Leader Oswald Skippings and July 16 with Progressive National Party Leader Dr. Rufus Ewing and their leadership teams included briefings on government plans in an effort to ensure a smooth transition after elections. During the week of July 23, members of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy will return to the TCI to continue their ongoing politician-to-politician dialogue about how to run effective election campaigns that comply with new election-related ordinances. This will be the third visit by members one of the world’s leading supporters of democratic institutions in support of a return to elected government. With a number of people expressing interest in running as independents, WFD member Scott Martin, a lawyer for the Scottish National Party, will be available to share his experience with the similar Scottish system whereby there are both constituency and regional representatives. Specific time slots have been set aside for prospective independent candidates to meet with members of the WFD delegation from 10 a.m.-noon July 26 on Grand Turk and 10-11:30 a.m. on Providenciales. In addition to David Thirlby of the WFD, the following politicians and political representatives will travel with the party: Conservative Andrew Percy and Liberal Democrat Stephen Gauge will lead on campaigning, and Martin and Labour Party James Swindlehurst will lead on the legal aspects of campaigning.
