TCSPCA and the Donkey Sanctuary Receive Assistance from Air Turks and Caicos PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Lending its philanthropy arm by partnering with the TCSPCA and the Donkey Sanctuary to launch one of the major breeding control programs ever conducted in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Air Turks and Caicos are one of the local companies supporting the effort to maintain the large roaming donkey population in Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos.

“Donkeys have been causing a nuisance on these Islands due to the high-levels of breeding. We were contacted by Government Officials of the Turks and Caicos Islands to help find a solution to this problem”, stated Dr. Andrew Trawford, Director of Veterinary Services and the Donkey Sanctuary.

The Donkey Sanctuary is a UK based charity working worldwide to improve conditions for donkeys and mules, founded Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE, born in Yorkshire. The objectives of the Donkey Sanctuary are to provide care, protection and or permanent security anywhere in the world for donkeys and mules which are in need of attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances, ill-usage or other like causes and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among donkeys and mules.

Working in collaboration with the Donkey Sanctuary’s visiting veterinarians is the Turks and Caicos Environmental Health Department in aid to control the welfare of the roaming problematic heard will in addition to welfare maintenance will also alter the heard reproductive systems to control over population. With the neutering of sixty male donkeys being target, Dr. Trawford noted “We have made a good start to the programme and we have already neutered over thirty animals”.

In light to Air Turks and Caicos providing complimentary air transportation for the visiting veterinarians and members of the TCSPCA to various Islands during their project, Elanor Finfin, Public Relations Officer for the company expressed, “We are always onboard for good cause regardless of its nature. As a national carrier, we do whatever we can do to create a better Turks and Caicos and to maximize the living standards of the Islands we serve. This collaboration with the TCSPCA and the Donkey Sanctuary created a humane way of controlling the animal population in Grand Turk, South and Salt Cay”.
